What Andy said, what Andy meant

As a veteran of many Andy Reid day-after news conferences, Daily News sports writer Paul Domowitch has learned to read between the lines when the Eagles' coach speaks. Each week, we will attempt to interpret some of Big Red's comments:

ON THE TWO COSTLY MUFFED PUNTS:

What he said: "Obviously, we thought we could get it done with those guys we had there and it didn't work out this game. But that's my responsibility to have it right and I didn't get this one right."

What he meant: "Hey, my initial plan was to put Max Jean-Gilles back there on punts. But Tom [Heckert] talked me out of it.

ON WHY HE DIDN'T USE BRIAN WESTBROOK TO RETURN PUNTS:

What he said: "I'm not even going to get into all that. I'm not even going to go there."

What he meant: "Tammy keeps asking me the same fricking thing."

ON REPORTS THE EAGLES WILL BRING BACK RENO MAHE:

What he said: "Not necessarily."

What he meant: "Reno's in New York making a fortune as a hand model. I don't think we could lure him out of retirement."

ON DONOVAN McNABB'S 15-FOR-33 PERFORMANCE:

What he said: "First thing, this was his first game back. I probably could've dialed up different plays for him. [It was] a bunch of things. He could've had a little bit better protection. There's a bunch of things that go into that."

What he meant: "Three guys on our line made the Eagles' 75th Anniversary Team [Shawn Andrews, William Thomas and Jon Runyan]. Sunday, they played like they were 75. It's not just the quarterback."

ON WHETHER McNABB LOOKED FATIGUED IN THE SECOND HALF:

What he said: "No, I didn't think so. I thought he held up pretty good. I saw him have to make some throws where he had to move around a little bit to make the throw, and he hasn't had to do that [in a while]."

What he meant: "You guys won't let him forget about that Super Bowl puking episode, will you? Just because he has a knee brace doesn't mean he's a couch potato."
