Clayton public official charged with fence theft

A public works official in Gloucester County has been charged with theft, accused of stealing $3,500 worth of fencing that had been donated to the Borough of Clayton.

Clifford Hart, 41, has worked as a supervisor for Clayton's public works department since March 2006. The fencing, along with a gate, had been donated for use at a municipal athletic field, said Bernie Weisenfeld, spokesman for Prosecutor Sean F. Dalton.

Hart allegedly took the fencing in October from the borough's public works yard. It was found partially installed at a friend's Atlantic County house, officials said. - Sam Wood
