What Andy said, what Andy meant

Posted: September 25, 2007

As a veteran of many Andy Reid day-after news conferences, Daily News sports writer Paul Domowitch has learned to read between the lines when the Eagles' coach speaks. Each week, we will attempt to interpret some of Big Red's comments:

ON DONOVAN McNABB'S PERFORMANCE:

What he said: "Donovan had an exceptional game. When he can manage to have a perfect [passer] rating, that's a plus for you."

What he meant: "Anybody got Rush Limbaugh's phone number?"

ON BRIAN WESTBROOK'S ABDOMINAL STRAIN, WHICH WAS ORIGINALLY LISTED AS BRUISED RIBS:

What he said: "It's near the rib, but it's not the rib. It's not a broken rib or dislodged rib. It's an abdominal strain.''

What he meant: "Did I say abdominal strain? No, no. I meant Andromeda strain. No, check that. I meant high ankle sprain. Er, no, it's actually a mild case of Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Yeah, yeah. That's what it is. Rocky Mountain spotted fever.''

ON TRIBUTE TO THE EAGLES' 75TH ANNIVERSARY TEAM:

What he said: "I'd like to thank the Luries for the tribute they did for the 75th anniversary team. They went above and beyond as far as the hospitality goes.''

What he meant: "There's absolutely no truth to the rumor that Jeff and Christina stuffed the ballot box so that I could beat out Greasy Neale.''

ON LIONS QB JON KITNA THROWING FOR 446 YARDS:

What he said: "We knew they had an explosive passing game. They were going to make some plays. That happens. But we kept battling and challenging their receivers. We didn't hang our heads on the big ones.''

What he meant: "When Calvin Johnson hurt his back and had to leave the game, I got down on my knees and said, 'Thank you, God. Thank you.' ''

ON PLAYERS' REACTION TO WIN:

What he said: "You enjoy it until you get back here Wednesday. They weren't out of their minds after the game. It's still a young season and we've got a good football team we've got to get ready to play.''

What he meant: "Get back to me when we manage to beat an AFC team.''
