Heisman Trophy Watch

Posted: October 12, 2007

Here is staff writer Mike Jensen's weekly look at the wide-open Heisman race.

THE FAVORITES

Darren McFadden

RB, Arkansas. Games against Chattanooga don't make or break Heisman bids. Last week, McFadden ran for 122 yards, and a teammate ran for 141.

This week: Auburn.

Matt Ryan

QB, Boston College. Ryan now should be on all voters' radars, with a couple of important games ahead. First, a national television appearance at Notre Dame, then a trip to Virginia Tech.

This week: At Notre Dame.

DeSean Jackson

WR, California. The Bears were off last week. USC's loss to Stanford makes Jackson the only viable West Coast candidate.

This week: Oregon State.

Tim Tebow

QB, Florida. The Gators have two losses and Tebow is a sophomore. Mark this down: He'll finish second or third, then be next season's preseason favorite.

This week: Off.

Mike Hart

RB, Michigan. He should pass 1,000 yards today and has yet to have the kind of game that would knock him out of consideration.

This week: Purdue.

RISING QUICKLY

Chase Daniel

QB, Missouri. If he has a big day at Oklahoma, Daniel will be in the thick of it, after a stunning game against Nebraska (33 of 47 passes for 401 yards and 2 touchdowns; 11 rushes for 72 yards and 2 more TDs).

This week: At Oklahoma.

DROPPED BACK

Andre Woodson

QB, Kentucky. A loss at South Carolina dropped him from serious contention.

This week: Louisiana State.

DROPPED OUT

Colt Brennan

QB, Hawaii. He sat out against Charleston Southern and threw five interceptions against Idaho, then left last week's Utah State game with another injury. Hawaii still is undefeated, but Brennan's season had to go just as perfectly.

This week: Tonight at San Jose State.

John David Booty

QB, USC. His basic credential was that USC was undefeated. Stanford took care of that.

This week: Arizona.
