Web Wealth: Untangled web

November 04, 2007|By Reid Kanaley, Inquirer Columnist

We began with sites that expertly predigest business literature. But our search led, as well, to sites for doing business on the Web, and for extending our recent investigation of smart phones.

Shorten the long. Brijit.com runs 100-words-or-less summaries of all those long articles you ought to be reading from the Economist, Foreign Policy, and a bunch of other journals, magazines and newspapers. There's a link to every full original, but each is also rated from "not a priority" to "exceptional, a must-read, not to be missed." The fare goes well beyond business, and includes ESPN The Magazine, Spin, and the Utne Reader.

Story continues below.

Go to Harvard. Even without a subscription to the Harvard Business Review, you can search years' worth of the venerable journal, read executive summaries of articles, and fetch at least some of the full articles for free. You need to screw the thinking cap on tight for this stuff. The latest issue tackles such brain matter as "A Leader's Framework for Decision Making," and "Solve the Succession Crisis by Growing Inside-Outside Leaders." Will do.

Internet digest. Often we look for one sort of thing on the Web and find quite another. This turned up in our hunt for Web sites that summarize business articles. The Internet Digest is full of marketing tips for people who do business, or want to do business, online. Click on "resources" for links to tutorials on Web page design, tips for optimizing your site to get into search engines, and advice on launching into e-mail marketing. Our favorite article title: "The Brand Called You."

Gadget reprieve. Last time, we looked at sites that review the latest smart phones for business and personal use. Here is one more for that list. On their blog, Kevin C. Tofel and James Kendrick (Tofel is based in Harleysville) say they have been "using mobile devices since they weighed 30 lbs." Their fare runs toward super geeky, but you'll also find such items as the YouTube video showing trick-or-treaters dressed as iPhones.
