Injuries catch up with the Patriots

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — Playing undermanned finally caught up to Central Bucks East. The Peters Township Indians defeated the injury-plagued Patriots, 2-0, in yesterday's PIAA Class AAA boys' state quarterfinal at Trojan Stadium.

The victory advanced the Indians (22-2-2) into Tuesday's semifinal round at a site to be determined. They will play Pine Richland, a 2-1 winner over Bethel Park.

C.B. East finished the season at 20-5-1.

"Tonight, we just didn't have it," Patriots midfielder Sean Peckham said.

Some Patriots could argue that reaching the state quarterfinals was a moral victory. Three key starters - junior defender Michael Whitaker (collarbone), senior midfielder Richard Lee (knee) and senior defender Devon Graham (pelvis) - missed the game with injuries. Two other Patriot starters junior forward Alex Shubert (foot) and sophomore defender Dan Christiansen (calf) - played less than full speed.

For the first 30 minutes, Shubert and Christiansen's presence appeared to give the Patriots a lift. Playing inspired ball, C.B. East routinely went toe-to-toe with Peters Township. The Patriots held their opponents to zero shots on goal during that stretch.

But the Indians finally got a break following a Peckham free kick. The Patriots' junior's kick from 17 yards out bounced off a wall of Peters Township defenders and into the possession of Indians midfielder Zack Schaefer.

Schaefer cleared the ball from midfield to deep into the Patriots' zone. After tracking it down, Peters Township midfielder Christian Brandstetter crossed it to senior forward Shane Pruitt. The all-American candidate and Lafayette recruit scored from 10 yards out in the 31st minute.

The Indians extended their lead to 2-0 on a header by Nick Wilcox in the 71st minute.
