Staley's Owls solve Bonnies; UConn survives

As a ball thief, Temple coach Dawn Staley was one of the best in a career that produced gold medals and WNBA all-star acclaim.

Recently, however, she has been more like a safecracker, trying to solve the Owls' four-game losing streak with myriad combinations.

She found one that worked last night in Temple's 73-62 Atlantic Ten win over St. Bonaventure at the Liacouras Center.

Staley took the victory but wasn't thrilled with the execution.

"I don't think things went right," she said. "I thought we put enough points on the scoreboard to win. But we're not playing very good basketball at the moment. We have to find a way to play better before Saturday, or else we'll have another massacre on our hands - like Rutgers."

No. 13 George Washington, the conference favorite, will visit at 2 p.m.

Freshman Lindsay Kimmel scored 10 of her 13 points in the first half last night for the Owls (8-10, 1-1), who shot 16 for 23 from the field to set a Temple record for a half at the Liacouras Center. But the Bonnies (12-5, 0-2) were within 38-31 at intermission.

With 11 minutes, 12 seconds to play in the game, Temple finally got going.

Ashley Morris, the Owls' leading scorer, left with 15 minutes remaining after suffering a cut above her right eye. Staley said she would be able to play against GW.

LaKeisha Eaddy matched Kimmel's point total (13), while Shenita Landry scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Katelyn Murray had 14 points for St. Bonaventure. Andrea Doneth added 13 points, while Dana Mitchell, a Pennsbury graduate, added 10.

Connecticut 65, Syracuse 59 - Maya Moore scored all 13 of her points in the second half and grabbed 17 rebounds to help the No. 1 Huskies (16-0, 4-0 Big East) get by the host Orange (14-3, 2-2) in New York.

It was the 29th straight regular-season win for Connecticut, but this one was a struggle: Syracuse was within a basket with 74 seconds to play.

"We got up 10, and I still felt like we were down five," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said.

Chandrea Jones led the Orange with 18 points.

Rutgers 57, Georgetown 47 - Essence Carson scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as the No. 5 Scarlet Knights (14-2, 4-0 Big East) defeated the Hoyas (10-6, 0-3) in Washington.

DePaul 91, St. John's 80 - The No. 23 Blue Demons (13-3, 2-1 Big East) had a 14-3 edge in overtime to outlast the Red Storm (10-6, 1-2) in Chicago.

Holy Family 75, Wilmington 68 - Freshman Catherine Carr poured in 38 points to lead the Tigers (13-0) past the Wildcats (8-6) in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia University 68, Chestnut Hill 56 - Taylor Magnus scored a career-high 16 points to lead the Rams (8-5) past the Griffins (2-11). Jenna Beck scored 17 points for Chestnut Hill.

University of the Sciences 57, Georgian Court 47 - Allison Weiss scored 15 points and Erin Chesnavich grabbed 16 rebounds to lead the Devils (7-6) past the Lions (5-9) in Lakewood, N.J.
