Cops: Man shot woman and self

A domestic argument turned deadly yesterday in Frankford when a man allegedly shot and wounded his ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.

Police said that the 26-year-old woman was in critical condition at Temple University Hospital. The ex-boyfriend, also 26, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Cops said the woman was walking from Horrocks Street to Haworth Street, near Oxford Avenue, about 10 a.m., when the man came up behind her and shot her three or four times.

The woman tried to run, but the man shot her two more times. He then put the pistol in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

"When I first saw them, I thought it was a couple of teenagers kidding around," said a witness, who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

"Not until I got up the street a little further did I come upon what was more than kidding around," the witness said.

"Her clothes were soaked," the witness said, referring to the blood all over the terrified victim.

The woman was shot in the left hip, arm, buttocks and thigh, police said.

Police withheld the names of the two, pending notification of the man's next of kin.

"What's the right plan [to fight crime] anymore?" said Pru, a neighbor who asked that her last name not be used.

"We thought that [former] Mayor Street had the right plan, but that wasn't the case," she added. "This is a quiet block, and the awful thing is that I moved up here from South Philadelphia to get away from all of this."
