'Canes snap Devils' win streak

Sergei Samsonov tapped in his own rebound with 3:24 left in overtime to lift the Carolina Hurricanes over visiting New Jersey last night, 2-1, snapping the Devils' five-game winning streak.

Samsonov finished with two goals for the Southeast Division-leading Hurricanes, who won their third straight and avoided being swept by New Jersey for the first time in 16 years.

In other games:

* At Boston, David Krejci scored his first NHL goal, and Tim Thomas stopped 22 shots for his second shutout of the season to lead the Bruins to their fourth consecutive win, 4-0 over the Ottawa Senators.

* At Montreal, Chris Higgins had two goals and an assist as the Canadiens scored four times in the first half of the third period in a 5-1 win over Atlanta.

* At Uniondale, N.Y., Evgeni Malkin and Jeff Taffe scored first-period goals for trade-depleted Pittsburgh, providing early offense for the Penguins in a 4-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

* At Washington, Brooks Laich had two goals and assisted on two others to lead the Capitals to a 4-1 win over Minnesota. It was the first two-goal and four-point game for Laich.

* At St. Louis, Loui Eriksson scored twice and Mike Ribeiro added a pair of assists in a three-goal third period for the Dallas Stars, who rallied to defeat the Blues, 3-1.

* At Calgary, Paul Stastny's power-play goal 3:02 into overtime lifted Colorado over the Flames, 3-2.

* At Edmonton, Robert Nilsson's shootout goal lifted the Oilers over Detroit, 4-3. Edmonton goalie Mathieu Garon made 40 saves. *
