The awful impact of divorce

Posted: May 12, 2008

I SUPPORT Sen. Fumo's legislation to ban divorce. I understand his motivation for introducing the bill, but now that he's brought it up, the state should look deeper into the impact of divorce, especially on families with children.

Children of divorced parents and unwed mothers are far more likely to grow up in poverty, especially in minority communities. Making it more difficult for parents to divorce would not only strengthen the institution of marriage (gay or straight), but also help improve the standard of living for thousands of children.

Current policy encourages single parenthood and therefore poverty. I say it's time to consider such a ban so adults can be held more accountable for the commitments they make to their kids and each other.

This would go a long way toward improving that which ails our city.
