Chris Brown, a Democrat who helped his party come into power in Burlington County's largest town, has found himself at the center of early campaign attacks in his bid for a seat on the all-Republican Board of Freeholders.

Brown, elected to Evesham's Township Council last year, is one of two Democratic contenders in this year's freeholders race.

In recent political attacks, the GOP has largely ignored Brown's running mate, Maryanne Reinhart, a committeewoman in the sparsely populated Shamong Township, while emphasizing Evesham's recent controversies.

At stake in Evesham are 28,094 registered voters, with 8,396 Democrats and 6,365 Republicans.

Last year, three Democrats swept two council seats and the mayor's office in a costly, hard-fought battle for the traditional GOP stronghold.

But Republicans are still eyeing the township they once ran.

"We believe we still have a strong Republican base there we can reach out to," said Jeff Bell, executive director of the Burlington County Republican Committee.

Brown's slate, including county clerk candidate Tim Tyler, is running on a platform of government efficiency and transparency and has been lobbing its own attacks against incumbents Stacey Jordan and Aubrey Fenton for alleged corruption, waste and nepotism. Gary Woodend is running with the Republicans for county clerk.

The Democrats, for their part, say their chances are good of cracking Republican control of the county.

In the June 3 primary, poorly funded GOP challengers won almost 40 percent of the vote, even after Jordan and Fenton together spent $178,170.

"Evesham has been notoriously a Republican territory, and I'm very popular, I think, in Evesham," said Brown, a business owner. "With that, they'll lose a very large town in their election."

Of the attacks, Brown said: "We've been in office for the last year. The prior 16 years all culminated to what we're dealing with today."

He was referring to the previous Republican administration, led by longtime Mayor Gus Tamburro. The new Township Council found itself grappling with a $5.5 million budget deficit and other problems, Brown said.

Still, mentioning no names, Medford Mayor Chris Myers, the Republican nominee for the Third District congressional seat, last month railed against tax hikes in Evesham as he stood before hundreds of members of the Burlington County Republican Committee.

More recently, Jordan and Fenton have addressed the controversy in Evesham surrounding a proposed artificial-turf field.
