14th-seeded Sibel surprises No. 3 Pedano in match play

Huntingdon Valley's Catharine Sibel knocked off third-seeded Monica Anne Pedano of Springhaven in a first-round upset in the Women's Golf Association of Philadelphia's 111th Match Play Championship yesterday at Rolling Green Golf Club in Springfield, Delaware County.

Sibel, seeded 14th in the 16-player Championship Flight competing for the Glenna Collett Vare trophy, posted a 4-and-2 win and earned a berth in today's quarterfinals against Philadelphia Cricket Club's Alison Shoemaker.

In other first-round highlights, top-seeded Laura Ladden of Whitford started her bid for a seventh title with a 5-and-4 win, and former champion Liz Haines of Merion slipped past Commonwealth National's Karen Siegel, 1 up.
