Duke officials were a bit surprised when about an hour before the scheduled kickoff of their game last night against James Madison, two men parachuted into Wallace Wade Stadium and landed at the 35-yard line with a game ball.
Problem was, the Blue Devils - who were warming up on the field along with their foes - weren't expecting it.
"All we know is, they must have missed their jump site," a team official said.
And they did - because the jump site was meant to be about eight miles away.
North Carolina was scheduled to receive the game ball for its contest against McNeese State in Chapel Hill.
According to a UNC official, the plane was in the air, but the jumpers from Virginia-based Aerial Adventures opted to cancel the leap into Kenan Stadium because of a severe weather front - which would later delay both games.
Evidently, when the clouds eventually opened, the pilot thought they were over the correct stadium, and the skydivers jumped - realizing only when they landed in Wallace Wade that they were in the wrong place.
"In about five years, maybe this will be funny," UNC associate athletic director Rick Steinbacher said. "Right now, I'm just glad no one was hurt."
Wells' injury. Heisman Trophy contender Chris "Beanie" Wells injured his right leg and the Ohio State tailback was carted off the field during the third quarter of the Buckeyes' game against Youngstown State.
Wells returned to the field in the fourth quarter wearing a boot on his right ankle. An Associated Press reporter asked him if he was OK and he nodded his head.
Ohio State spokeswoman Shelly Poe, sitting next to Wells said: "We don't know anything until the X-rays come back."
Wells walked into the locker room from the bench area after Ohio State's 43-0 victory, but appeared to be almost dragging his right leg.
On the play, Wells fell to the ground before he was even hit, fumbling the football away. He writhed on the ground in pain.
The junior finished with 111 yards on 13 carries, including a 43-yard touchdown burst.
Texas retires No. 10. Texas retired Vince Young's No. 10 jersey, honoring the former Longhorns quarterback with a ceremony before the kickoff of the opener vs. Florida Atlantic.
"I definitely want to thank our fans," Young told the crowd, which saluted him with a standing ovation as he flashed a "Hook'em Horns" with his right hand. "Ya'll's heart, ya'll's spirit . . . ya'll mean a whole lot to me."
He joins Earl Campbell (20), Bobby Layne (22), Ricky Williams (34) and Tommy Nobis (60) as the Texas football players to have their numbers retired.
