September 02, 2008

A 3-year-old boy remained in critical condition after being struck by a car while holding hands with his mother as he crossed a street in Olney Sunday night, police said.

The boy and his mother were crossing B Street near Lima Avenue when the boy stepped in front of his mother between two cars and walked into the street about 7:50 p.m., said Sgt. Larry Ritchie of the Accident Investigation District. Ritchie said the two, whose names were not released, had left a family gathering and were walking home.

The mother was knocked down, receiving minor injuries, Ritchie said. Police said the boy was taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

The driver stopped at the scene and was not charged. Authorities said the investigation was ongoing. - Barbara Boyer
