Pass the Gravy! Gray skies or blue: Time to play it out

September 07, 2008

I've always liked storms. Yesterday's especially. It made sense.

We had nothing but college football and gunboat gray skies to bide our time until today. Yet the delay seemed appropriate. Brett Myers' performance Friday against the Mets was masterly. My buddy and I watched the thing slack-jawed, awed by what Myers was able to do. Eight innings of shutout baseball - and all from a guy who's had a very strange season indeed. Greg Dobbs' homer barely cleared the wall. Amazing stuff all around.

It was the sort that makes you appreciate the game. Why not stop and revel in the victory a bit longer?

Yes, a pause. And because of it, today brings a different kind of storm - one of anticipation and energy. Today feels like an either-or proposition: Either the Phillies lift our spirits or they crush them; either the Eagles win and make it a day to remember, or they fall and we all try to forget. It really does seem like an all-or-nothing day, doesn't it? And would you change it even if you could?

A storm yesterday, and one more today. It just feels right.

Eagles: Fox, 1 p.m.

Phillies: First game, 2:15 p.m. on CW57; second game, 8 p.m. on ESPN.
