Local QBs off to impressive starts

Week 1 of the NFL season was an example of how well the Philadelphia area grows its quarterbacks.

Astute company. Atlanta's Matt Ryan (Penn Charter) and Baltimore's Joe Flacco (Audubon) won their professional debuts, marking the first time two rookie quarterbacks won in Week 1 since 1971 (Jim Plunkett for the Patriots and Archie Manning for the Saints).

The other guy. Houston's Matt Schaub (West Chester East) was unable to make it a hat trick as his Texans lost to Pittsburgh. Schaub was involved in a key early play, failing to make a first down on fourth-and-1 from the Steelers 48 on the Texans' first drive of the game.

Story continues below.

Only 600 days. Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones rated his return "about a C-plus" after coming back from a 17-month suspension. Jones, who last played Dec. 31, 2006, had just one low point - a pass-interference penalty. "It was real emotional," he said of his return. "But that's what I live for. It was great. I enjoyed myself. I have no regrets."

They love Bush. Reggie Bush, that is. The New Orleans Saints running back, trying to come back from a sophomore slump, gained 163 yards from scrimmage including the go-ahead 42-yard touchdown catch on which he juked Tampa Bay's Jermaine Phillips out of his shoes. "The play before he was talking trash," Bush said, "and the next play he was on my highlight tape."

Young problems. Tennessee quarterback Vince Young suffered a sprained knee late in the Titans' win over Jacksonville when he was hit by linebacker Daryl Smith on a bootleg. Young was booed after throwing two interceptions.

Injury ward. Cowboys running back Marion Barber left the game against Cleveland in the third quarter with bruised ribs. Seattle receiver Nate Burleson sustained a left knee injury in the third quarter vs. Buffalo.

San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith, who lost his job in training camp to J.T. O'Sullivan, never dressed for the Arizona game after feeling pain in his surgically repaired right shoulder Friday.

Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks left his game with a hamstring injury.

Chad Eight Five. The NFL ruled the Cincinnati wide receiver now known as Chad Ocho Cinco must wear the name Johnson on the back of his uniform. The league said whoever-he-is must resolve his financial obligation to Reebok, which produces jerseys available to fans, before he'll be allowed to change.
