Battle for league supremacy begins

Glen Mills, Garnet Valley, and St. Joseph's Prep are all favored in this weekend's games.

Week No. 4 is highlighted by the start of conference/division play in the Suburban One League, Catholic League, Public League, and Del-Val League.

Tropical Storm Hanna played havoc with the Week No. 2 slate. Then rain hammered much of the area (St. Joseph's Prep and North Penn played in the Mud Bowl) last Friday. Here's hoping (yes, again) for clear skies and dry fields.

Last week: 7-4.

Overall: 22-10.

Interboro (1-2) at No. 9 Glen Mills (3-0), tonight, 7. The Battling Bulls are back in the Del-Val League for the first time since 1994. And their return was not exactly embraced by Bucs coach Steve Lennox. Will Interboro win and keep its 10-year stranglehold on the first-place hardware? Or is Glen Mills the new king of the hill? We say it's the latter.

Pick: Glen Mills, 26-21.

No. 5 Garnet Valley (3-0) at Strath Haven (2-1), tonight, 7. Coming off their PIAA Class AAA state championship game appearance, the Jaguars have showed no signs of slowing down. Their three-pronged attack is made up of running backs Tim Keyser and Jared Bonacquisti and quarterback Mark McHugh. That trio spells trouble for the Panthers in this Central League matchup.

Pick: Garnet Valley, 28-7.

No. 3 St. Joseph's Prep (2-1) vs. La Salle (2-1), at Plymouth Whitemarsh, tomorrow, 1. La Salle's 27-26 upset of West Catholic on Saturday makes this Catholic League Class AAAA Division opener an intriguing one. The Explorers and Hawks have two of the better quarterbacks in the area in Drew Loughery and Mark Giubilato, respectively. The Prep, fired up after losing to North Penn, gets back on track.

Pick: Prep, 34-19.

No. 10 Roman Catholic (1-1) at Chestnut Hill Academy (2-1), tomorrow, 1. The Cahillites pulled off the top upset in Week No. 3, turning back previously undefeated and then-No. 4 Souderton, 32-14, in South Philly. Kasseim Everett, averaging 225 rushing yards per game, will be a handful for the young and rebuilding Blue Devils. The key for the Cahillites is stopping the latest Campbell rushing standout, Ibraheim.

Pick: Roman, 38-13.

Other games to watch:

West Chester East (1-2) at West Chester Henderson (2-1), tonight, 7. Pick: Henderson, 26-12.

Perkiomen Valley (1-2) at Pottsgrove (2-1), tonight, 7. Pick: Pottsgrove, 29-18.

Conestoga (2-1) at No. 9 Ridley (3-0), tonight, 7. Pick: Ridley, 31-10.

Pennsbury (2-1) at Council Rock South (3-0), tonight, 7. Pick: Pennsbury, 22-16.

Upper Merion (2-1) at Wissahickon (3-0), tonight, 7. Pick: Wissahickon, 14-13.

Archbishop Carroll (1-2) vs. West Catholic (2-1), at Widener, tonight, 7:30. Pick: West, 31-14.

Bristol (3-0) at Jenkintown (3-0), tomorrow, 1. Pick: Bristol, 27-12.

Norristown (2-1) at Cheltenham (2-1), tomorrow, 1. Pick: Norristown, 23-21.

Archbishop Ryan (0-3) vs. Father Judge (1-2), at Northeast, tomorrow, 7. Pick: Judge, 27-7.
