Eagles Talking Points

October 06, 2008|by Paul Domowitch

What we're talking about following the Eagles' loss to Washington:

-- What happened to that all-world run defense? Eagles gave up 203 rushing yards to the Redskins, which is just 12 fewer than they gave up in their first four games combined.

-- Brian Westbrook's health. After missing last week's game with an ankle injury, Westbrook suffered a first-quarter rib injury. Rushed for 22 yards on four carries on the Eagles' first possession, including a 9-yard TD run, than rushed for just 11 yards on eight carries the rest of the game.

Story continues below.

-- David Akers' struggles. Akers was wide right on a 50-yard field goal attempt Sunday. If you're counting, he's 3 for his last 14 from 40-plus yards and zero for his last 9 from 45-plus. Distance isn't the problem. Accuracy is.

-- The longest yard. The Eagles lost to the Bears last week when they couldn't punch the ball into the end zone on three tries from the 1-yard line. Sunday, they failed to convert a third-and-1 at the Washington 2 midway through the fourth quarter when Westbrook was thrown for a 3-yard loss. Once again, a QB sneak wasn't a consideration.

-- The third-down defense. The Redskins converted 11 of 19 third-down opportunities. In the Eagles' three losses, their opponents have converted a disturbing 24 of 46 third-down opportunities. In their two wins: 2 of 24.
