Phillies likely to be underdogs

October 16, 2008

OK, the champagne isn't even dry on the pinstripes and the junior circuit representative has yet to be decided, but we thought you'd like to know which way the oddsmakers are going to lean in the World Series.

For starters, keep in mind that the Phillies will face a team that has homefield advantage. Both the Phillies' postseason losses this year have come away from Citizens Bank Park.

It's a pretty good bet that would make them an underdog against either Tampa Bay or Boston.

Story continues below.

If the Red Sox bounce back from their recent trouncings and pull out the American League Championship Series with three straight wins, they would seem to rate a significant favorite (say -$140) over the Phillies.

Should Tampa roll another "9" or "13" and dethrone the defending champs tonight, they very well could rate about the same price as the Sox.

Even if the Rays struggle in putting the Red Sox away and have to get into the weekend to do so, they'd still rate a slight favorite (-$120 or so) over the Phils.

Stay tuned. *
