Flyers Notes: Players say Phillies' title inspirational

Flyers Notes

Can the Phillies' World Series title have a carryover effect on the rest of the city's sports teams?

Based on history, it's not so far-fetched.

When the Phils won their only other World Series, in 1980, the Flyers, Eagles and 76ers also reached the finals in their leagues.

Virtually all of the Flyers said they watched the Phils' electric, Series-clinching win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.

"When you see the guys enjoying all the hard work they put into the season, it's huge, and it's something that, hopefully, we can take from them and bring it here," defenseman Kimmo Timonen said before last night's game against the New York Islanders.

Story continues below.

"We have a good enough team to get there, and hopefully we can do that," Timonen said. "But if you look at the Phillies' lineup, it's not just one or two or three guys that did it. The guys at the bottom came through. What you can take away from that game is that, to be a championship team in any sport, you need everybody."

Winger Mike Knuble said he was excited for the Phillies and the city.

"When you hear the talk of the parade coming and how many millions will be there, it gets you [pumped]," Knuble said. "I was lucky I was part of it when I was in Detroit and got to ride in a couple parades. They're moments in your career you wish could last forever."

Added Knuble about the Phillies' parade, "You see the results and it gets you excited. It would be really fun to have black-and-orange floats going down the street someday."

"It's something you want to do for the city and for your teammates, too," center Mike Richards said about the Phils' title. "It's nice to see them win and nice to see Philadelphia win because they obviously deserve a championship. They're so passionate about their sports and they stick with you in the highs and lows."

Downie promoted

Forward Steve Downie was promoted from the AHL Phantoms to replace the injured Darroll Powe, out with a slight concussion.

"I think [Downie] went down with the right attitude. He went down there and, by all accounts, was the best player down there and made a difference in every game," coach John Stevens said.

Stevens said Downie, who received lots of playing time with the Phantoms, will have to play himself into getting more minutes with the Flyers.
