Bill Conlin: Will Amaro's promotion spark Phillies front-office exodus?

One or two Phillies rookie position players will get a chance to make the team in spring training . . . The Phils gave a lot of money to Texas high-school outfielder Greg Golson in 2004. At age 23, the centerfielder is a 5-year minor leaguer. Golson runs faster than Shane Victorino, has more power and an equally strong arm. He should be knocking on the door by now, but looked appallingly raw when called up in September. His shabby play, particularly his aimless flailing at breaking balls, blew away any chance of his addition to the postseason roster. Imagine the savings that GM Amaro would realize if Jason Donald could win the third-base job and Golson played well enough to make Charlie Manuel consider a blazing-fast, howitzer-throwing outfield of Jayson Werth in left, Golson in center and Victorino playing right a few yards behind Utley . . . Just a thought, Rube, high-round draft picks actually making the ballclub before they're too old to trade. What a concept. *
