Pat Summitt, Dean Smith and Lou Carnesecca, Hall of Fame coaches, received the inaugural Joe Lapchick Character Awards at New York's Madison Square Garden.
The awards honor those in college sports who have conducted themselves in a way Lapchick did throughout his playing career as one of the sport's first big men, and then as a coach in two stints at St. John's around one with the New York Knicks.

The Columbus Crew's Guillermo Barros Schelotto, a midfield wizard who was a longtime star in his native Argentina, won the MLS most valuable player award.
