The Opelika-Auburn News quoted Olive Tuberville as saying her son told her he was dismissed by Auburn.
Last week, athletic director Jay Jacobs said Tuberville's departure was completely the coach's decision, and that he and university president Jay Gogue asked Tuberville to remain.
Auburn spokeswoman Deedie Dowdle said the university stands by Jacobs' statement that Tuberville resigned.

Eastern Michigan men's basketball coach Charles Ramsey was suspended for three days for what the school called a "postgame altercation" with a fan last month.
School spokesman Jim Streeter said the dispute involved Ramsey and a fan after a game at the University of Detroit on Nov. 22, but declined to say if physical contact was involved. He did not give further details.
