MINNEAPOLIS - Tarvaris Jackson, a young quarterback, and Brad Childress, his old coach, both got to look at Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb yesterday from across the field.

Afterward, they spoke in admiring terms.

Asked if he had an appreciation for McNabb, Jackson said, "Yes. He took a couple of shots today and made a couple of plays with his feet. Sacks would have been big but he did a pretty good job even if he didn't complete the pass. He did a good job of getting rid of the football. Even when he was getting hit, he found a couple of guys and made plays."

As for Childress - now the Vikings' head coach but also McNabb's first quarterback coach with the Eagles - it was the same.

"I obviously haven't seen any numbers yet, but he's a hard guy to get on the ground," he said. "He's a 248-, 250-pound guy and unless you wrap him up you're going to bounce off him. We did a good job of putting him on his back a few times, but he did a good job of getting himself out of trouble - which he has the ability to do."

On the Vikings' defensive line, too, there was nothing but praise for McNabb's physical toughness most of all - but also for the timeliness of their biggest offensive play, a 71-yard screen pass that Brian Westbrook turned into a touchdown in the fourth quarter of the Eagles' 26-14 victory.

"He's been in this league a long time and he's been to the playoffs many times and he is cool under pressure," said Jared Allen, the Vikings' terror of a defensive end. "I tell you what, whoever says that guy can't move still is a liar. I thought he was running around out there quite nice. He is a heck of a player. They've got playmakers and they ended up making the play at the right time and they won the game." *
