  • The Eagles' Brian Westbrook runs back a punt 84 yards and a TD as the Eagles beat the Giants, 14-10, on Oct. 19, 2003 in the Meadowlands.
  • Even David Akers can't stop the Giants' Ron Dixon, who returned the opening kickoff 96 yards for a TD on Jan. 7, 2001.

Even for two teams that have played each other 151 times since 1933, the Eagles and Giants have manufactured an awful lot

of memorable moments. This rivalry has had a little of everything. Wild wins and wild wind. Heartbreaking losses and backbreaking hits. Acrobatic touchdowns and clownish play-calls. Record punts and record reversals.

It was the Giants who thumped the Eagles in Philadelphia's first NFL game, 56-0 on Oct. 15, 1933. It was Buddy Ryan's Eagles

who beat Bill Parcells' powerful Giants five of six times from 1988 to 1990, a three-year span when the Giants were a combined 38-14. It was the Giants who denied the 1961 Eagles a chance to repeat as league champions, and the Giants who denied the 1981 Eagles a chance to repeat as NFC champions.

Story continues below.

1. Miracle at the Meadowlands

Nov. 19, 1978, the Meadowlands, Eagles 19, Giants 17: Even now, more than three decades later, it's difficult to comprehend what happened in the final seconds of that game. The 6-5 Eagles trailed the 5-6 Giants, 17-12, with 31 seconds left. They had no time-outs left. One knee by Giants quarterback Joe Pisarcik would have ended it. But on second down, when Pisarcik had taken a knee, Eagles linebacker Bill Bergey had rammed into center Jim Clark, who careened into the QB. Not wanting to risk an injury to Pisarcik on a similar play, offensive coordinator Bob Gibson called for a handoff to Larry Csonka. Csonka tried to veto the play in the huddle. New York head coach John McVay, whose headset was malfunctioning, later said that had he heard the call, he'd have overruled it. Instead, Pisarcik and Csonka botched the third-and-2 handoff. The ball caromed off the turf and into Herman Edwards' grasp. The cornerback and future coach ran it 26 yards for the go-ahead touchdown. Gibson was fired the next morning, McVay after the 6-10 season concluded. Buoyed by the miraculous, Dick Vermeil's Eagles would go on to their first postseason appearance - not counting two consolation Playoff Bowl appearances - since 1960.
