What We Saw

January 19, 2009|By Daily News Staff

Each week, Daily News football writer Paul Domowitch will tell you the things he will be keeping his eyes on during that week's game:

1. Putting heat on Warner: The Eagles found out yesterday that if you give Kurt Warner time, he will slice and dice your secondary. The Cardinals quarterback, who completed just 53.8 percent of his passes in a regular-season loss to the Eagles, was 21-for-28 for 279 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions yesterday.

2. Eagles in the red: The Eagles were just 2-for-5 in the red zone in their playoff win against the Giants. Coming into yesterday's game they had converted just seven of their last 21 trips inside the 20 into TDs. Yesterday they only had two opportunities. On one, Brent Celek scored on a 6-yard pass from Donovan McNabb. On the other, the Eagles settled for a field goal.

Story continues below.

3. The turnover battle: Counting yesterday, the Cardinals are 11-0 this season in games in which they've won the turnover battle or broken even. Yesterday, the Cardinals threw no interceptions and lost just one fumble. The Eagles lost two fumbles and threw one interception.

4. The return game: The Cardinals' coverage units weren't very good this season. They finished 30th in the league in both punt coverage and kickoff coverage. But yesterday, they didn't have to work very hard as the Eagles only returned one punt (for 13 yards) and two kickoffs (for 20 yards, all on one return).

5. Fast start for McNabb: When Donovan McNabb gets off to a good start, the Eagles usually win. When he doesn't, they usually don't. In the Eagles' 11 wins, McNabb had a 64 percent completion rate and averaged 7.7 yards per attempt in the first half. In six losses and a tie vs. Cincinnati, he had a 54.3 percent completion rate, averaged just 6.1 yards per attempt and threw three TDs in the first half. Yesterday, he finished 11-for-19 for 109 yards in the first half, a completion rate of 57.8 percent. But, he had one interception and no touchdowns and finished the first half with a passer rating of 52.3.
