Eagles' training daze

August 06, 2009|by Ed Barkowitz

The Eagles are a week away from opening their preseason slate at home against New England, but it's already been quite an eventful training camp. Here's a look:

Sunday, July 26: Rookies and select veterans reported. The only player failing to show up was first-round pick Jeremy Maclin, who was holding out because of a contract dispute.

Monday, July 27: One veteran, injured franchise running back Brian Westbrook, worked out with trainer Rick Burkholder.

Tuesday, July 28: Longtime defensive coordinator Jim Johnson died of cancer at age 68.

Wednesday, July 29: The remaining veterans reported, including disgruntled cornerback Sheldon Brown. Maclin continued his holdout.

Thursday, July 30: Shawn Andrews, Jason Peters and Asante Samuel were among those suffering injuries in a conditioning drill. Andrews has yet to return to full practice.

Friday, July 31: The first day of full-contact practices.

Sunday, Aug. 2: Flight Night, the Eagles' first training-camp practice ever held at Lincoln Financial Field, was a rousing success except for the knee injury suffered by starting linebacker Stewart Bradley. Also, Maclin finally agreed to terms.

Monday, Aug. 3: Andy Reid chastised the media for preemptively reporting that Bradley would miss the season before the coach could deliver the news at a midafternoon news conference.

Wednesday, Aug. 5: Juqua Parker was arrested after a traffic stop revealed the defensive end was carrying a "small" amount of marijuana, according to Lower Saucon Township police.
