Even after Segal and Banner agreed on a contract, Vick's signing faced a significant hurdle - Lurie's approval. Lurie doesn't seem to be the kind of guy who often disagrees with Banner or Reid, in their realms, but he made it pretty clear yesterday that he initially disagreed this time. In fact, Vick spent Thursday at Lurie's Main Line home before the chairman gave his blessing, and Lurie spoke to a lot of other people, before making up his mind.

Story continues below.

"I wanted to know everything," Lurie said, in the most remarkable address of his 15-year ownership. "I wanted to know about the cruelty, the torture, the humiliation, and most of all I wanted to know why Michael was being reinstated into the National Football League, a league that he disgraced.

"After multiple conversations, I felt more open . . . to giving a human being a second chance, who possibly could become a socially active NFL player who actually could do great things off the field."

The Eagles released safety Byron Parker to clear a roster spot for Michael Vick . . . With Vick being issued his familiar No. 7, a quarterback's number, it would seem likely he will be the No. 2 QB on game days, when he becomes eligible to play. In the normal third quarterback position, he could not enter the game before the fourth quarter, unless the other two quarterbacks left the game permanently. Of course, the Eagles could just fully activate three QBs, but that would leave them short a special-teams player. *
