Researcher: Vick not Birds' first felon

August 15, 2009|Daily News Staff Report

It looks as if Michael Vick isn't the first player the Eagles have been willing to give a "second chance" in the franchise's history.

According to John Maxymuk, a reference librarian at Rutgers-Camden who has written two books on the Eagles, Vick follows Alabama Pitts and Don MacGregor as convicted felons who have been with the Birds.

Pitts was an end who was signed after serving time in Sing Sing for armed robbery. He caught two passes for 21 yards in three games during the 1935 season.

MacGregor had a tryout with the team in 1943 after serving prison time in Iowa for car theft, but did not make the roster for the "Steagles" (the one-season wartime merger of the Eagles and Steelers).
