Anti-Vick Web site targets sponsors

August 15, 2009|By Mike Jensen, Inquirer Staff Writer

Yesterday, the online campaign was already running on www.sackvick.net, asking like-minded people, unhappy with the Eagles' decision to sign Michael Vick, to "protest Vick's new sponsors."

The Web site referred to Eagles sponsors and it listed them, and many of their CEOs and their e-mail addresses and phone numbers, from Verizon Wireless and KFC and Lincoln Financial.

Meanwhile, the Eagles made some quick moves of their own on the public-relations front, sending a note yesterday to their "premium-service clients" - their suiteholders. The note says the Eagles understand "this decision may result in some personal soul-searching for you, along with some public debate in the coming days and weeks. We do not want this to distract from the relationship we have with you, and we remain fully committed in putting the highest-quality product on the field and delivering wins to Eagles fans."

Story continues below.

The note didn't include the word "dog," but did include a statement by Eagles president Joe Banner on the subject of Vick deserving a second chance and then the note asked that "you join us in our support and optimism for Michael as he commits himself to showing Philadelphia and the country he is a changed human being."

Jan Garber isn't an Eagles suiteholder, or even an Eagles fan, but she said in an e-mail that she "spent the morning well," calling Eagles sponsors after finding them on the Eagles Web site.

"This is my own campaign; the corporate sponsors are on the Eagles' Web site," Garber said. "I am not an Eagles fan, just a native Philadelphian who is shocked and dismayed by this clandestine signing of a criminal to the local franchise. This maneuvering smacks of, 'The fans will have to accept it. They'll get over it. Think of the publicity! We'll make millions more this season.' "

Garber got a few responses, she said, "but only Budweiser said anything of substance," declining to elaborate. "The others pretty much washed their hands of the matter by saying they have no part in the Eagles' management decisions," Garber said, contacting the newspaper about her protest.
