The Wildcat formation is characterized by an unbalanced offensive line, motion before the snap that makes it look like a sweep, and a direct snap that could go to a running back, wide receiver or quarterback. It usually is a sweep or a reverse, although passing is an option.
The modern version of the single wing, it has been run in high schools for about a decade. Before that, a version called the Wing-T was run by Tubby Raymond at the University of Delaware. The University of Arkansas instituted the Wildcat in 2006 behind offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn, who parlayed it into a better job and was succeeded at Arkansas by David Lee. Lee brought the Wildcat to the NFL last season when he was hired as the Miami Dolphins' quarterbacks coach.
