Another woman jogger raped in Fairmount Park

A young woman jogging in Fairmount Park was raped yesterday morning, police said, the second such attack in as many weeks.

Authorities stopped short of saying that yesterday's rape was related to the rape of a jogger Aug. 11, or that either case was linked to the so-called Fairmount Park Rapist.

"We're not sure if it has anything to do with anything else going on," said Lt. Frank Vanore, police spokesman.

Yesterday's assault happened about 8 a.m. on Edgely Drive just north of the East Park Reservoir and near four historic Fairmount Park mansions.

The 21-year-old victim described her attacker as a black man, 40 to 50 years old, about 5 feet 8 with a dark complexion and a light mustache, police said. He was wearing a blue T-shirt and blue-jean shorts.

Authorities said that they planned to increase the police presence in Fairmount Park after a 34-year-old woman was raped at about 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11 near Bells Mill Road and Forbidden Drive.

That woman couldn't describe her attacker except to say that he was wearing gardening gloves, dirty jeans and brown work boots, and had the smell of garlic on his breath, police said.

The so-called Fairmount Park Rapist - who remains at large and unidentified - assaulted four women in Philadelphia parks between 2003 and 2007, including Rebecca Park, 30 a medical student who was strangled and her body placed in a shallow grave.
