Vick shows rust at QB in final preseason game

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - It was a draw between Wildcat Vick and Quarterback Vick.

In his first game back at quarterback after dogfighting charges drove him out of the NFL, Michael Vick showed the sort of rust you might have expected after a 21/2-year exile from football.

The new Eagles quarterback displayed glimpses of the athleticism fans of the game remembered from when Vick was with the Atlanta Falcons. Those moments were rare, however, as the Eagles lost to the Jets, 38-27, in their preseason finale last night at Giants Stadium.

"There were a lot of things I could have done better, but it was good to get out there and play some quarterback on a consistent basis and shake off the cobwebs," Vick said.

For the second straight week, Vick was used occasionally in the Eagles' Wildcat package during the first half. He had more success than he did last week when he was splitting time with starter Donovan McNabb, but his production was more workmanlike than spectacular.

"As far as rhythm goes, I wouldn't compare it to the first week," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "I think the first week we were getting used to it. The second week, obviously, you're a little further into it.

"I think [Vick] got a chance to see that he has a little juice in those legs. He turned it on a couple of times there. . . . He'll be sore tomorrow."

Vick learned yesterday that he would be suspended only for the first two games of the regular season. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell ruled that the 29-year-old would be eligible to play by Week 3 when the Eagles host Kansas City.

Last night, for his first quarterbacking duties since Dec. 31, 2006, Vick did not have the luxury of playing with the first-team offense, and more important, the first-team offensive line.

In the second half, he was sacked four times. Overall, he completed 7 of 11 passes for 26 yards, throwing one first-half interception. He also rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.

"I felt like it was more production," Vick said. "Just a lot of things that we can do. My mind-set is to help this team to whatever capacity I can, to do the things that I know that I can do."

On the first two drives of the second half, Vick and the Eagles went three and out. The first possession ended when the quarterback threw a deep incompletion into double coverage. The second was thwarted when a scrambling Vick was dropped for a 22-yard sack. He evaded two rushers, but was pummeled and fumbled. A fortunate bounce gave him the ball back.
