Whose town is it, anyway?

We've learned some interesting things about the Eagles recently. Forbes lists the Birds as the seventh "most valuable" franchise in the NFL. The team is reportedly worth $1.12 billion. And the other day, Joe Banner went on Missanelli's show and said the Vick signing had nothing to do with wanting publicity since the Eagles already get enough of that. Banner cited the team's robust TV ratings relative to the average baseball game and hinted that Philadelphia is still very much an Eagles town.

The Birds are obviously a successful franchise, but are they more popular than the defending world champion Phillies? Settle the debate: Is it still an Eagles town or are the Fightin's on top now?

What about the 76ers?

It's a football town. Pats on the back to the Phillies, they are at peak popularity, but I still don't think they rival a football Sunday in Philadelphia.

Good point, Kate. Bob, if you'd like to vote for the 76ers (or the Flyers), feel free. I know Ed Stefanski would appreciate it.

This is a tough one. The city has been obsessed with the Eagles forever. It's our local soap opera. When I was a kid, we used to make the trip out to West Chester for training camp and it was such a big deal - like going to see a huge movie premiere in L.A. or a megafight in Vegas. It had that kind of feel.

But the Phils delivered the city's first championship in 25 years - bless their hearts - and they have a good shot to go deep into the playoffs again this season. For the first time since I can remember, people are focusing on the Phils as much as they are on the Eagles.

This is sort of lame, but I'm calling it a push.

I've been here long enough to see this go back and forth a little. I was convinced in the late '70s, early '80s that this was a baseball town, even in years when the Eagles were competitive. Then the Phillies went through their little quarter-century of stinking up the place, the NFL boomed beyond all comprehension and now, regardless of everything, it is a football town. If the Eagles went 5-11 for five or six years and seemed Detroit Lions-kind of hopeless, maybe it would swing back, but I don't see it.

I think you guys underestimate the power of that parade. It was a football town. Now the interest in both teams is about as equal as it's ever been, at least in my lifetime.

We can see things differently, Mr. Gonzoman. In fact, I'd be disappointed if we didn't.

I like the Mr. part. You should probably address me that way from now on, Mr. Buttons.

I would like to address your skinny butt back to Boston and stuff you in a mailbox.
