Panthers' Stewart, Beason return to field

CHARLOTTE - As much as Carolina Panthers coach John Fox likes to have all players practicing and playing in the preseason, he knows it's vastly more important to have them ready to play when the regular season opens.

Thus, his patience was rewarded yesterday when running back Jonathan Stewart and linebacker Jon Beason returned to the field for the first time in 29 and 19 days, respectively. Both are expected to play in Sunday's season opener against the Eagles.

"They both looked really good," said Fox. "I thought that both had a good day's work."

Stewart hadn't practiced since Aug. 11 and sat out all four exhibitions to give his sore Achilles' tendon the rest it needed to heal. He said he didn't experience pain during yesterday's practice.

Stewart's return means the Eagles will get a dose of "Double Trouble," the nickname Stewart and running back mate DeAngelo Williams chose for themselves late last season.

Beason came back faster than many expected after suffering a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee during the Panthers' Aug. 22 exhibition at Miami.

He was injured 3 weeks before the start of the regular season, which put his status for the Eagles' game in doubt.

"I try to think of myself kind of bionic a little bit, that I heal fast," said Beason. "It was an opportunity to prove everybody wrong, even the docs."

Notes

Rookie cornerback Captain Munnerlyn said he was told before yesterday's practice that he would be returning punts for the Panthers on Sunday. Carolina planned to sign free agent Mark Jones, who returned punts and kicks for the Panthers last season. But Jones, who starred at Strath Haven High, failed a physical over the weekend due to a hamstring injury. He likely will be signed when he recovers.
