BCS busters

Just a guess, but what will be the readout of the BCS computers should Boise State and BYU (of the Mountain West Conference), each in a non-BCS league, both go undefeated? Only one likely would qualify for a high-profile, megabucks BCS bowl.

By virtue of its schedule, which already includes an upset of Oklahoma and an upcoming date with a good but not great Florida State team, BYU might hold the inside track. But wouldn't it be interesting if the undefeated Cougars and Broncos could square off in something called the BCS Buster Bowl? Winner would be named national champion of the little-guy programs that aren't really so little any more.

Luck of the Chippewas

Central Michigan coach Butch Jones must have been carrying around a four-leaf clover and rabbit's foot in his pocket during Saturday's game at Michigan State.

He nixed a chance at a game-tying conversion kick after Chippewas quarterback Dan LeFevour's touchdown pass with 32 seconds left brought them within 27-26. Jones went for the win, but LeFevour passed incomplete on a two-point PAT try.

Andrew Aguila then perfectly executed an onsides kick, which was recovered by teammate Bryan Anderson, putting CMU in position to win on Aguila's 47-yard field goal attempt, which was wide left. Unfortunately for the Spartans, Colin Neely was offsides, enabling Aguila to nail a 42-yarder with 3 seconds left that lifted the Chippewas to a 29-27 upset.
