Cairo ends drought in grand fashion

October 05, 2009

Miguel Cairo snapped a 4-year home-run drought with his fourth-inning blast in yesterday's regular-season finale with the Marlins.

And Jeanine Harman reaped the rewards.

Cairo had been homerless in 821 at-bats (last one coming July 28, 2005). But as that streak was broken, Harman, of Carneys Point, N.J., became $1,000 richer as Cairo's leadoff shot arrived during the Daily News Home Run payoff inning.

Harman could not be reached for comment, but we feel confident she's glad Cairo decided to shake off the rust and deliver.

Five others collected prizes in yesterday's game. They were:

Patrick Falls Sr., West Berlin, N.J.

Elissa Hummer, Glenside

Robert Katz, Voorhees, N.J.

Margaret Price, Lewistown

Carol Amorose, Philadelphia

Three others won Phillies Gift Packs in the fourth inning of Saturday's Phillies-Marlins game:

Brendan Sample, Hulmeville

Katie Valentine, Philadelphia

John Hearn, Cedarville, N.J.

The Daily News pays $1,000 for a home run hit in the Payoff inning and $10,000 for a grand slam. Contestants whose batters fail to hit a home run receive a gift pack, which includes a variety of Phillies-related items.

This season, the Daily News has paid out $23,000 on 19 Payoff homers. *
