This year: In 97 games this year, Dobbs hit .247 with 20 RBI. He battled through a bad calf that has limited his playing time.

Career: Dobbs hit .301 in 2008 and has evolved into a huge presence off the bench. The Phillies hope he can help off the bench in the postseason as he did a season ago. His versatility has made him invaluable to manager Charlie Manuel, who has used Dobbs in five different positions on the field.

The year after: "Every year poses its challenges," Dobbs said of the start of the postseason. "I don't know if this one was any tougher to face. Last year's experience definitely helps. To a certain extent, we understand what we need to do. If anything, we're more prepared this year than last. I think we may be more eager to repeat."

About the bench: The Phillies are carrying 12 pitchers in the Division Series, leaving the bench at five: Dobbs, Miguel Cairo, Ben Francisco, Matt Stairs and Paul Bako. Dobbs, Stairs and Bako are lefthanded hitters.

Understanding the franchise: Last May, Dobbs took an opportunity to visit Ashburn Alley and the Wall of Fame. "If there was one guy I would have loved to meet it was John Vukovich," he said. "From the people I've talked to, he was one of a kind and a huge part of this organization." A similar sentiment came through yesterday: "It's more powerful when you look back to last year and hear [Harry Kalas'] call and watch him make the call. I look back and can see through his eyes how important this ballclub and city were to him."

Due vs. Rox: Dobbs has just four career at-bats against current Rockies pitchers. He is 0-for-4 against Matt Belisle, Jason Hammel and Jason Marquis.
