Who will be the unlikely hero?

So who will emerge as the Phillies' unlikely hero this postseason? Members of the Daily News' sports staff weigh in.

Bill Conlin:

BEN FRANCISCO

The well-rounded outfielder's only real weakness is an apparent set of tiny wheels on his uniform derriere that causes him to slide over the bag on stolen-base attempts. Look for him to pop a home run to remember against the Rockies.

Paul Hagen:

PEDRO FELIZ

Surrounded by All-Stars, he tends to go unnoticed. When he is talked about, it's usually to compliment his defense. But who drove in the game-winning run in the decisive game of the World Series last year? Who led the Phillies in hitting with runners in scoring position this year? That's right, Feliz. It would be surprising to see him come up big.

Marcus Hayes:

JAYSON WERTH

How can an All-Star be an unlikely hero? By exceeding expectations. If the Phillies win even a round or two of these playoffs, it most likely will be without the best efforts of lefty sluggers Chase Utley, Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez, simply because the opposition will key on them and try to mitigate their damage. Unlike them, Werth will get strikes to hit. Considering no Phillies arm seems hot enough to warrant confidence, offense might have to carry the day ... and Werth might have to carry the offense.

Rich Hofmann:

CARLOS RUIZ

There are times - temporary occasions, mostly - when everything seems to come together at the plate for Ruiz. When he is locked in - sometimes it is only for a few days at a time, and then it disappears - he can be a really authoritative hitter. And it only takes a moment in the postseason - and Ruiz did hit .313 in the NLCS last year and .375 in the World Series.

David Murphy:

CARLOS RUIZ

In a lineup packed with power, the eight-hole hitter can sometimes be forgotten. But Ruiz hit .310 with a .406 on base percentage in his last 32 games of the regular season and has driven in some crucial runs. He has all the makings of an unlikely star.
