Vick gets his reps under center

Eagles coach Andy Reid made an interesting decision after his team built a big enough lead to send in the reserves yesterday at Lincoln Financial Field.

Instead of inserting Kevin Kolb, the No. 2 quarterback who had started the previous two games in Donovan McNabb's absence, Reid turned over the offense to Michael Vick with just under six minutes left in the Eagles' 33-14 win over Tampa Bay.

"I wanted to give [Vick] some game reps there," Reid said. "Kevin has had the game reps. Michael needs that."

Vick was clearly happy to have a chance to run the offense for the first time this season.

"Being under center is more natural for me," Vick said. "That is what I like to do. That's what I enjoy. In due time, I'll get my opportunities."

Vick completed just 1 of 3 for 1 yard, but he drew his loudest cheer to date at the Linc when he scrambled for 11 yards and a first down on a third-and-9 play.

"Everything broke down and I got a little rush from the left," Vick said. "So I just tried to move a little bit and just let it be natural."

Vick left the field in favor of Kolb after that play because he suffered a minor rib injury and was quickly examined by trainer Rick Burkholder before going back on the field.

"I got kneed in the ribs," he said. "X-rays were negative. I'm OK."

Prior to entering the game as the Eagles' quarterback, Vick was on the field six times in the Wildcat formation. The team gained just 7 yards on those plays.

"It's going to vary week to week depending on the flow of the game," Vick said. "That is something I totally understand. The important thing is for the offense to flow, to get into a rhythm."

Injuries and interceptions

The Eagles' cornerbacks accounted for three interceptions and suffered three injuries.

Asante Samuel had two interceptions. One prevented a touchdown near the end of the first half and another set up a touchdown early in the second half. Sheldon Brown's third interception of the season stopped a scoring chance late in the third quarter.

"Finally as an Eagle, I got a two-pick game," Samuel said.

Samuel strained his right calf defending a throw from Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Johnson to Michael Clayton with just under 10 minutes left in the game.

"Nothing major . . . it probably looked worse than it was," said Samuel, who has a magnetic resonance imaging examination scheduled for this morning. "I was just going after the ball and the muscle just spasmed up. We'll find out more tomorrow."
