Jackson and '60 Eagles

October 15, 2009

BOBBY JACKSON had a short NFL career - only two seasons - but the d-back from Alabama holds a special place in Eagles lore.

Generously listed as 6-1, 190 pounds, Jackson's first and only season with the Eagles was 1960. He was a defensive back on that NFL championship squad, the last Eagles team to bring home the title.

He played in all 12 regular-season games that year, not doing a whole bunch to distinguish himself. But in the title game against Green Bay on Dec. 26, Jackson had a hand in the final play of the season.

Story continues below.

Bart Starr flung a pass to Jim Taylor from the Eagles' 22. Jackson caught up to Taylor at the 9-yard-line, Chuck Bendarik brought him down and the Packers' final drive was stopped short. Bednarik, of course, remained atop Taylor for several seconds and the Packers were unable to run another play. The Eagles had a crown.

Jackson died Monday at age 73 in Mobile, Ala., his hometown. His NFL career might have been brief, but he made history at the University of Alabama in 1958 as legendary coach Bear Bryant's first quarterback. Jackson spent 1 more year in the NFL, playing nine games for the Chicago Bears in 1961.

Rest in peace, Bobby. We didn't forget you here in Philly.

Wildcat whining

"I can't respect that stuff, all that Wildcat, because we're in the NFL, man," Pace told the New York Times after the game. He backed off a bit yesterday, telling the Associated Press he tips his hat to the Dolphins.

Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown is the primary weapon in Miami's Wildcat offense. His response? "If you don't want us to keep running it, stop it. Then we'll have to go to something else."

Besides, since when is it "nonsense" to win? For the Fish, this "gimmick" is successful.

New York Jets coach Rex Ryan described the Wildcat offense as a "gimmick" out of college. Jets linebacker Calvin Pace called the formation "nonsense." They both said this a day after the Miami Dolphins used the funky offense to scratch out a 31-27 win over the Jets on Monday.
