Outside the lines

The future of the Dodgers ownership was thrown into doubt with the announcement that Frank and Jamie McCourt have separated. But manager Joe Torre said yesterday that the uncertainty will have no impact on how the team performs.

"It's not going to affect anything we do," he said. "My players and myself, we have a job to do and whatever is going on there is certainly not going to affect what we do here. It's unfortunate and I feel badly, but it's one of those things that happens in life."

The news about the separation came out shortly after Torre denied a report that he could walk away at the end of the season because he found working for baseball's power couple intolerable.

He said his relationship with them was fine and that he intends to come back in 2010 for the final year of his contract. *
