TODAY, the sound of Angel Moroni's trumpet is one of liberty. The Salt Lake City Council unanimously granted housing and employment rights to lesbian, bisexual, gay and transgender people. This vote got a historic endorsement from the Mormon Church. According to Michael Otterson, director of public affairs, "The church supports these ordinances because they are fair and reasonable."
Meanwhile, in Pennsylvania, it remains legal to fire and deny housing to someone because of their sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. I hope that religious groups who are so fervent against marriage equality, a position still affirmed by the LDS church, will heed the call of Mormons in Salt Lake and grant equal protection in employment and housing laws.
