'Cats move up to No. 2; Penn cracks Top 25

November 17, 2009|Daily News Staff Report

Villanova moved up one spot to second in The Sports Network poll and Penn is in the Top 25 for the first time since 2005.

Following their 49-7 win over Towson, the Wildcats (9-1) jumped over unbeaten Montana (10-0), even though Montana received more first-place votes.

Southern Illinois (9-1) remained at No. 1 and has 49 first-place votes.

'Nova closes at home against Delaware (6-4) on Saturday. With a win, it gets the conference's automatic bid to the playoffs, and one of the top seeds. If the 'Cats lose, they're still in, but the road to Chattanooga will become more difficult.

The Quakers (7-2) are ranked 24th and have won seven consecutive games. The last time Penn was ranked was on Oct. 24, 2005, when it was 25th.

With its 17-7 win over Harvard, Penn won a share of the Ivy League title and can win the title outright with a victory over Cornell at home on Saturday.

Senior linebacker Jake Lewko was named the defensive player of the week, recording a career-high 15 tackles. Senior quarterback Kyle Olson was the offensive player of the week. He accounted for both of the Quakers' touchdowns, throwing for 159 yards and a touchdown on 14-for-24 passing, while also rushing for a TD.

Nittany notes

Penn State running back Brandon Beachum tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a kickoff return to start the second half against Indiana and will miss the rest of the season.

Beachum will have surgery within the next 2 weeks and will be sidelined for a minimum of 9 months. The sophomore has played in every game this season on offense and special teams.

Also, junior linebacker Navorro Bowman was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after he recorded 12 tackles and returned an interception 73 yards for a touchdown. It is the second conference honor of his career.
