Penn's football team earned a ranking in the top 25 for the first time in more than four years.

The Quakers were ranked No. 24 in the Sports Network media poll and No. 25 in the Football Championship Subdivision (Division I-AA) coaches' poll.

The Quakers are 7-2, have won seven straight, and are 6-0 in the Ivy League. A 17-7 win at Harvard on Saturday clinched at least a share of the Ivy League title.

The last time Penn was in the top 25 was on Oct. 24, 2005, when the Quakers were ranked 25th in the media poll.

Penn linebacker Jake Lewko was named the Ivy League's defensive player of the week; quarterback Kyle Olson was offensive player of the week.

Penn State loses Beachum. Backup tailback Brandon Beachum will miss the rest of Penn State's season because of a right knee injury.

The sophomore will undergo surgery in the next two weeks after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament on a kickoff return Saturday against Indiana, a university spokesman said.

Knights lose Young. Rutgers announced that running back Kordell Young will miss the rest of the season with an injury to his right knee.

The third-down specialist out of West Deptford High was hurt during the Scarlet Knights' 31-0 victory against South Florida. He will need surgery.

Michigan hit again. The University of Michigan released embarrassing details of an internal audit, revealing that coach Rich Rodriguez had failed to file forms tracking how much time players spent on football during the 2008 season and the off-season last spring.

The NCAA and the school are investigating the program about similar issues.

The audit was completed months ago, but the details surfaced this week because they are part of the agenda for Thursday's board of regents meeting. Rodriguez has said he and his coaches follow NCAA rules.

Noteworthy. Dick Tomey said he plans to retire at the end of the season after 29 years as a head coach, including the last five at San Jose State. Tomey also coached Hawaii and Arizona. . . . Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin said wide receiver Nu'Keese Richardson, 18, and defensive back Mike Edwards, 18, were dismissed from the team after they were charged with robbing a convenience store at gunpoint last Thursday. . . . UNLV fired coach Mike Sanford after five losing seasons, a 15-43 record and no bowl appearances.
