BALTIMORE - The drought is over.

Point guard Zack Rosen finished with a team-high 28 points and the Penn Quakers celebrated their first win of the season, an 82-71 victory over host Maryland-Baltimore County last night at RAC Arena.

The win was the first for Penn (1-10) since a 51-50 decision over Columbia on March 7.

"I think the guys bought into that we need one another and we have to play as a team if we are going to move forward," said Penn coach Jerome Allen. "We made some mistakes tonight, but they were mistakes made trying to do the right thing."

Rosen shot 8-for-8 from the foul line and 8-for-12 from the field. Allen, a former point guard for the Quakers, praised Rosen's performance.

"I believe everything starts with the point guard, and Zack has accepted that role," Allen said. "He likes the challenge, and even though I may ride him harder than the rest, it's only because his job has so much responsibility."

Darren Smith added 15 points and Jack Eggleston grabbed 11 rebounds.

The Quakers led at the half, 35-33, then shot 12-for-20 from the field in the second half.

Chris De La Rosa (28 points) and Chauncey Gilliam (18) paced UMBC, which fell to 1-13.

The Quakers host No. 21 Temple at the Palestra next Wednesday.

"We still need to clean up things defensively, we still just aren't clicking in some spots," Allen said. "For now, we plan on enjoying this win and moving forward."
