She wore only pajama pants, a T-shirt and clogs on the night that the second-largest snowfall in Philadelphia history was beginning.

State Police know how she died: She was killed running across six lanes of highway traffic near Philadelphia International Airport.

But over the weekend, the mystery for State Police piled up as quickly as the snow had: Who was this woman, and why was she running across Interstate 95?

Police said last night that the unidentified woman was not running to or from a broken-down vehicle, and that they found it difficult to determine what she could have been running to or from.

Story continues below.

Authorities were called to Mile Marker 12 on I-95 southbound about 6:40 p.m. Friday when the 24-year-old driver of a 2001 Pontiac Bonneville struck the woman in the left lane.

She was pronounced dead at the scene by Philadelphia Fire Department Rescue.

She was described as white, about 290 pounds, 5 feet 3 inches, and about 35 years old.

She had light-brown hair and brown eyes and wore black fleece pajama pants, an extra-large green T-shirt and white clogs , police said.

The driver of the vehicle, a Chester woman, was not charged in the crash.

State Police are asking anyone with information about the victim to call the Philadelphia barracks at 215-560-6200.
