AROUND THE CITY

Lost Saturday

The two ranked teams went into the blizzard and got buried. Villanova and Temple were down by a combined 37 points at halftime, recovered a bit, but were never a threat to win.

The blitz

The Wildcats (20-2, 9-1 Big East) were in the game until the Hoyas (17-5, 7-4) went off in the final 11 minutes of the first half, scoring 31 points on the way to a 103-90 win.

The Hoyas threw over the 'Cats' pressure for easy threes, backcut them in the halfcourt for layups, and then hit them with well-screened treys that always seemed wide open.

Story continues below.

Combine the defense with the turnovers and it was the prescription for disaster. At one point, 'Nova had 11 turnovers, 11 fouls and nine field goals. The 'Cats were shooting 50 percent and down 21 points.

The bonus

Georgetown got into the bonus early in each half. Super aggressive 'Nova committed 38 personals. G-Town was 39-for-50 from the foul line.

The numbers

G-Town had 21 assists on 27 field goals. Villanova had 11 on 32.

'Nova did not just disappear. It kept pushing in the second half behind Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher; each scored 24 points. But the 'Cats just got too far behind against a really good team.

G-Town's Austin Freeman (25) and Jason Clark (24) combined to shoot 16-for-23. Clark was 6-for-7 from the arc.

Blown out in Richmond

Temple could do nothing with Richmond's Kevin Anderson (29 points) at any time, or his team in the first half when the Spiders shot an incredible 17-for-22 overall (77.3 percent) and 8-for-11 from the arc. Richmond (18-6, 7-2 Atlantic 10) won, 71-54.

The shooting numbers

Temple (19-5, 7-2) has won all season with its defense. The Spiders shot 57.8 percent, the Owls shot just 32.1 percent. The amazing thing was that Temple actually got within striking distance in the second half. The Owls could not sustain it.

Allen's numbers

Lavoy Allen (17 points, career-best 19 rebounds, 10 offensive) did what he could. But when Ryan Brooks (1-for-8) had a rare off game, Temple just did not have enough.

No Juan

Owls guard Juan Fernandez has been off his game since taking a blow to the head at Fordham on Jan. 23. He scored three, four and five points in the next three games. He was held out of the Richmond game as a precaution.

Streaking Dragons

Drexel (14-11, 9-4 Colonial) has put itself right into the conference race after a 73-60 win over George Mason (15-9, 10-3) at the DAC.

The Dragons have swept league-leader Northeastern and given them their only league losses (11-2).
