There are 46 million reasons for health-care reform

Posted: March 08, 2010

THERE are many reasons that this country needs a universal health-care plan.

One: A friend developed a heart condition. She will have to claim medical bankruptcy because she has no insurance.

Another: My brother, who has hepatitis C, can't afford to see a doctor to monitor it because he can't get insurance.

And while my other brother was in a diabetic coma fighting for his life, his insurer tried to cancel his policy because his illness was costing them too much. He was forced to stockpile medication so he'd have enough when he was released from the hospital.

As for me, without my insurance I couldn't afford the medication I need to control a neurological condition. These are just a few reasons that we need universal care, and there are 46 million more. Let's hope you never end up with a reason of your own.
