Walsh calm and in control on way to repeat

ATLANTIC CITY — Taylor Walsh won two titles in two ways.

Last year, the Camden Catholic wrestler came out on top of a wild scramble in the final seconds to capture the 135-pound state crown.

This year, Walsh was in control from the first period and registered an 8-2 victory over Passaic Valley's Frank Crocco to win the 145-pound state title yesterday at Boardwalk Hall.

"I just felt so calm," Walsh said. "I just felt so good, so strong."

Walsh became Camden Catholic's first two-time state champion. The senior finished his season with a 37-4 record and his career with a 142-15 mark.

"That means a lot to me," Walsh said of becoming Camden Catholic's first two-time champ.

Walsh's first title was dramatic and emotional. He was a junior who wrestled with abandon.

This year, Walsh had to deal with the pressure of being a defending state champion.

"Some guys have trouble with that, and they can get knocked out," he said. "They run too high. I just concentrated on staying calm and enjoying the moment. I wanted to make the most of it."

Camden Catholic coach Jerry Boland said Walsh's victory in the state final was typical of his season.

"He was just so smart," Boland said. "He was focused all year on getting back here and winning again."
